Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 aims at enhancing the livelihood security of the households in the rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult member volunteer to do unskilled manual labour. This enactment creates a rights-based framework for wage employment programmes and makes the Government legally accountable for providing employment to those who seek it.
The Act was notified in Palakkad and Wayanad districts with effect from 2nd February, 2006 and then extended to Kasaragod and Idukki districts with effect from 1st April , 2007. The remaining ten districts were notified under the Act with effect from 1st April, 2008. Thus Mahatma Gandhi NREGS covers the entire State with the exception of the urban areas.
